Although "children are our future," they can certainly
consume a great deal of our time, efforts, and energies in the
present. Our Child and Family Center makes it easy for parents to talk
with licensed professionals who have the expertise to answer your
questions and plan a course of helpful actions. When you have
worrisome concerns about the well-being of a child or family, the Manassas
Group tradition of comprehensive, high quality professional services will
bring you to a specialist who can help.

Our Center can assist with any concerns you may have
about your child's behavior at home or in school, academic problems,
emotional health, or family relationships. Our approaches in dealing
with these problems center on non-pharmacological methods, although we
also work closely with physicians whenever we believe medications will
help. Ordinarily, our solutions incorporate therapy, skill-building,
parent education, and/or training components. They are designed to
be comprehensive, long-term solutions, as opposed to immediate, "quick
fix" approaches.
The following itemizes some
of the more common problems that our therapists see, although this list is
not intended to be exhaustive:
-
Attention Deficit Disorder
-
Hyperactive Behavior
-
Anger Problems
-
Depression and Mood Disorders
-
Anxiety and O.C.D.
-
Defiant/Oppositional/Acting-Out Behavior
-
Drug and/or Alcohol Abuse

Because there are numerous people involved with a
child's life, the Manassas Group Child and Family Center has four clusters
of services designed to be of assistance.
- 1-Assessments:
Our professionals will meet with one or both parents as well as
the child. The professional will design and administer a battery
of psychological tests, in order to further evaluate the child.
Behavioral inventories and other feedback will be gathered from other
sources who have had contact with the child. This information is
combined in a written report, which will be reviewed with the family
members at a feedback session. A plan of action will be outlined
including specific recommendations for treatment, if indicated.
- 2-Family Consultation:
This is a brief series of meetings (usually no more than four) with a
child and/or family members. The aim is to clinically assess the
child/family situation (without using psychological tests) and then
offer feedback to the family in such a way as to bring about
short-term intervention and/or to lay the groundwork for longer-term
interventions.
- 3-Child and Family Therapy:
Manassas Group professionals are available to conduct a course of
individual and/or family therapy sessions designed to alleviate the
problems of concern. Parent education classes may be included,
as one component.
- 4-Community Consultation
Services: These sessions assist
school or agency workers who are involved with children in other
settings (such as public or private school classrooms, day-care
centers, etc.). The aims here are to expand the awareness of those
working with children, as well as to assist them to more effectively
work with children in their settings.
